Elma George

Elma H. George VIRGINIA BEACH - Elma Harris George, 91, passed away Aug. 28, 2008, at the home of her daughter in Virginia Beach. She was born Sept. 13, 1916, in Grandy, N.C., the daughter of the late Gettis Harris and Ruth Mercer Harris, and her stepmother, Myra S. Harris. Mrs. George was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Leon Wesley George. A charter member of Fox Hall Baptist Church in Norfolk, now Cornerstone Baptist Church, Mrs. George was elected as a deaconess and was a member of the Dorcas Bible Class. She served as YWA leader, Sunday school teacher, Bible School teacher and Women's Missionary Group leader. She also volunteered as a Pink Lady at DePaul Hospital and was honored for her service with her 1,000-hour pin. As a team, she and Leon delivered Meals on Wheels in Norfolk for many years. She is survived by her son, Kenneth L. George Sr. and his wife Dean of Chesapeake; two daughters, Sylvia G. Witherspoon and her husband Larry of Carrollton, Va., and Yvonne G. Glass and her husband Doug of Virginia Beach; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. She is also survived by sisters, Frances W. Moore of Chesapeake and Gloria H. Poyner and her husband Louis of Water Lily, N.C., as well as many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her sisters, Ruby H. Pierce and Hazel H. Dale; her brother, Gettis Harris Jr.; stepsister, Nellie S. Steadman; stepbrother, J.S. Snow; and stepson, R. Harvey George. A funeral will be conducted Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Cornerstone Baptist Church, corner of Princess Anne and Sewells Point Roads, by the Rev. Fred Braswell. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5792 Greenwich Road, Virginia Beach.
