Robert Powers Obituary


Robert E. Powers NORFOLK - Robert "Bob" Eugene Powers, 80, passed away Sept. 6, 2008, in his home. Born in Portsmouth, he was the son of the late Irene Estelle Powers and Corey Powers. Mr. Powers served in the U.S. Coast Guard and Merchant Marines. He joined the Norfolk Fire Department in 1950 and retired in 1976 as a lieutenant. He was a Baptist and enjoyed a wide range of interests. He and his wife pursued pleasure boating for 16 years and traveled the bay and beyond on the "Rainmaker". He had been a member of the Masons for 52 years in Elizabeth Lodge 34, the Scottish Rite, Knights Templar, Khedive Temple and Royal Order of the Shrine. He was also a member of the Norfolk Fire Department Retirees Club and the Azalea Acres Civic League. Mr. Powers was preceded in death by his sisters, Elsie M. Malloy and Irene Wilson and brother, Clarence L. "Chuck" Powers. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 58 years, Margaret E. Powers. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Mary Powell "Tommie" Doxey and spouse Burnley "Bunny" Doxey of Newport News and Miriam P. Riggs of Merrill, Wis.; numerous nieces and nephews; as well as a large number of friends. A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Smith and Williams Funeral Home, 818 Norview Ave., Norfolk, VA 23509. Friends may visit the family immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Norfolk SPCA, 916 Ballentine Blvd., Norfolk, VA 23504. You may offer condolences to the family at www.mem.com.
