Leon Haynes Obituary


Leon E. Haynes Jr. VIRGINIA BEACH - Leon E. Haynes Jr., 76, passed away Sept. 7, 2008, in a local hospital after an extended illness. A native of Virginia Beach, Mr. Haynes retired from the Norfolk Sheriff's Dept. with more than 25 years of service. He ran a successful catering business for 41 years. He prided himself on elegant presentations and superior service. His work was respected throughout the Tidewater area and his parties were well attended. Often called "Sonny," Mr. Haynes is survived by a daughter, Shelia Mallory (Arthur) of Laurel, Md.; a son, Leon E. Haynes III (Annita) of Pittsburgh; a sister, Viola Madison of Chesapeake; three grandsons; two god children; his devoted companion, Maurice Taylor; and many relatives, friends and professional acquaintances. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Morning Star Baptist Church, 4780 First Court Road, Virginia Beach. Interment will be at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Norfolk. Family and friends will assemble at 5564 Daniel Smith Road, one hour prior to the service for the procession to the church. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Metropolitan Funeral Service, Berkley Ave. Chapel. Contributions may be made to the NSU Scholarship Fund, c/o Shelia Haynes Mallory.
