Betty Buckman Obituary

Betty A. Buckman VIRGINIA BEACH - Betty A. Buckman, 98, died Sept. 13, 2008, at Beth Sholom Home. She was the beloved wife of William "Bill" Buckman, of blessed memory. She was the youngest of five sisters and one brother who have all predeceased her. She is survived by her three sons, Stanley and his wife Glenda of Cherry Hill, N.J., Robert "Bob" and his wife Edye of Virginia Beach and Leslie Martin of Norfolk. She leaves behind four grandchildren, Bruce Buckman and his wife Diane of Fort Washington, Pa., Donna Perch and her husband Tom of Kinnelon, N.J., Larry Buckman of Virginia Beach, Terri Buckman of Haymarket, Va.; and six great-grandchildren, Corey, Bret, Michele, Allison, Laila and Kelsey. Betty came to this country from Lithuania with her family in 1922, at the age of 12, and settled in Baltimore. She moved to Norfolk in 1930 when she married Bill. After World War II, she and Bill worked in their grocery store until 1968 when they retired. Betty was an active member of Hadassah, B'nai Israel Synagogue and the Sisterhood. She also volunteered at Beth Sholom Home from 1987 until her mid 90s when she was no longer able due to declining health. She was honored in 1994 as Volunteer of the Month at Beth Sholom Home and then in 1997 as Volunteer of the Year. She came to the home Mondays to give manicures to the residents and on Sundays to enjoy the entertainment and to help serve refreshments to the residents. They looked forward to her visits and to reminisce with her, many of whom she had known for years. This gave her great pleasure being able to help the "old" people although she was older than most of the residents. She became a resident of Beth Sholom Home in 2007. In addition to the immediate family, she will be missed by all of her many nieces, nephews and friends at the home. Our family wishes to thank the nurses and the staff of Beth Sholom for their loving care and kindness to our mother. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Forest Lawn Cemetery with Rabbi Arthur Ruberg officiating. Shiva will be at the home of her grandson Larry Buckman through Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to the Beth Sholom Home of Eastern Virginia, 6401 Auburn Drive, Virginia Beach, VA 23464. Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5792 Greenwich Road, Virginia Beach, is handling the arrangements. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.altmeyer.com.
