Nannie Barnes Obituary


Nannie C. Barnes VIRGINIA BEACH - Nannie C. Barnes died Sept. 13, 2008, in Laurel Regional Hospital. She was born Nannie Coleman in Tazewell, Tenn., Nov. 16, 1917, but spent most of her childhood in Middlesboro, Ky. After the death of her father, Roy Coleman, Nannie, her mother Lillie and two sisters, Fern and Johnie, moved to Norfolk in 1938. She later met and married a young Navy pilot, Charles S. "Barney" Barnes. They had four children, Charles, David, Cheryl and Aletha "Lynn." Besides being a wonderful mother, Nannie was an avid reader, bingo player and loved to crochet beautiful afghans. Nannie was preceded in death by her husband, Barney; her daughter, Cheryl Barnes; her son, David Barnes; her parents, Lillie and Roy Coleman; and her sister, Fern King. She is survived by her son, Charles Barnes of Virginia Beach; her daughter, Lynn Barnes of Silver Spring, Md.; her sister, Johnie Woolbright of Virginia Beach; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Services will be Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008, at 2 p.m. in Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5792 Greenwich Road, Virginia Beach.
