Alton Butler Obituary


Alton M. Butler VIRGINIA BEACH - Alton M. Butler, 82, of Westminster Canterbury, died Sept. 18, 2008. Mr. Butler was born in Norfolk Nov. 30, 1925. He was the son of the late John T. and Lellen O. Butler. He was predeceased by three brothers, Marion, Everette and Norman and one sister, Sydenia. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy O. Butler; three children, Sharon, Alton Jr. "Sonny" and Allyson; one granddaughter, Rebecca; Lorain Crain, who is very special to the family; and nieces and nephews. Mr. Butler attended Maury High School and The William and Mary Extension, now Old Dominion University. He was self employed as a land surveyor for more than 30 years and retired in 1990. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks and Oceana Lions Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and could build and repair most anything. For many years, Mr. Butler sang in the quartet of the First Presbyterian Church of Norfolk, and was a soloist in the Crucifixion and the Messiah at many Norfolk churches. The family would like to give special thanks to the second floor staff of the Hoy Center, Westminster Canterbury. A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. today in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel. Burial will follow in Princess Anne Memorial Park. A memorial service will be held at Westminster Canterbury at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Virginia Beach SPCA or the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad, First Settlers EMS and Fire station, 2837 Shore Drive, Virginia Beach, VA 23451.
