Marie Edgar Obituary

Marie L. Edgar NORFOLK - Our mother, Marie L. "Mary Lou" Edgar, 80, went to be with our Lord in the early morning hours of Sunday, Sept. 21, 2008, while the dew was still on the roses. Mary Lou was born in West Barrington, R.I., in 1928 to the late Christopher and Louise DaSilva, and graduated from West Barrington High School. She attended Elon College in North Carolina, and later graduated from Pan American Business School in Richmond. Mom eventually settled in Norfolk in 1956, where she began her family and remained until her death. She was preceded in death by her wonderful husband, Edward E. Edgar Sr. Left to cherish her memory are her children, the Hon. Deborah L. Rawls of Virginia Beach, Dr. Harvey P. Rawls Jr. of Virginia Beach and Dr. William H. Rawls and his loving wife Susan of Norfolk; grandchildren, William M. Hutchens III, Virginia Frances Rawls, William H. Rawls Jr., David Edward Rawls, Harvey P. Rawls III and Guy Edward Rawls. She is also survived by the father of her children, Dr. Harvey P. Rawls; her stepgrandchildren, Edward E. Edgar III and his wife Mary Kay, Susan Edgar-Smith and her husband Lawrence and Chad Edgar, as well as by their mother, Dencie Guindon and her husband Jerry; and her sister, Florence Noyes and her husband Robert of Rhode Island. Our mother was a living example of a true Christian woman, whose acts of kindness, devotion to family and thoughtfulness to her friends demonstrated her love of the Lord and her willingness to walk humbly as a servant of Jesus Christ. Mom was a true believer in Proverbs 22:6 - "Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it," and she was so proud of the accomplishments of her children. Mary Lou and Eddie enjoyed many happy years in the Lakewood neighborhood of Norfolk, where they developed lifelong friendships and a wonderful sense of community. Mom was active in the Lakewood Civic League, Lakewood Garden Club, Lakewood Sewing Circle, Elizabeth River Woman's Club, Red Hat Society and the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club. She was a faithful member of Royster Memorial Presbyterian Church. Her most special times were spent with her children and grandchildren at the family home in Lakewood, at annual family vacations in the Outer Banks, and in her last year at her new home at Harbor's Edge Retirement Community. The family would like to offer special thanks to Anita Atkins, Charmaine Brown, Helen Lee, Lolita Allen, Carmen McClain, Rose Aurpofo, Shawanda Allen, Nicole Doney, Barbara Jones, as well as all of the wonderful staff at Harbor's Edge who made her last year so comfortable. A celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Royster Memorial Presbyterian Church by Dr. John Monroe. Burial will be private. A reception will follow the service in the church fellowship hall. The family will be at Cox Funeral Home to receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today. Family and friends are invited to gather at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Bill Rawls following the visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Tree of Lives (African AIDS Ministries), P.O. Box 11390, Norfolk, VA 23517. Condolences may be offered to the family through www.dmvobits.com/cox.

Debbie, Hobie, and Bill - Your mother was one of the most wonderful persons I have had the pleasure of knowing. Always remember how lucky you were to have had her as a role model when you were growing up. She was very proud of all of you. You should also be applauded for the dignity and respect with which you treated her in these last years. We will all miss her.

I fondly remember Mary Lou as one of the Lakewood Ladies who were such fine role models for me during my younger days in the neighborhood. I know her family will miss her very much.
