Herbert James Obituary


Herbert H. James SOUTH MILLS - Herbert Hodges James, 95, a resident of the 100 block of Island Road, South Mills, died Sept. 24, 2008, at Winslow Memorial Home, Elizabeth City. He was born in Pasquotank County, North Carolina, and was the son of the late Hodges James and Etta White James. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during World War II, a member of the South Mills Church of Christ, a retired truck driver and an avid Yankee fan. He was preceded in death by his wife, Janie Marie Brewer James. He is survived by his daughter, Glenda J. Whitehurst and husband John of South Mills; his sons, David H. James and wife Joanie of Chesapeake and Danny H. James and wife Joann of Elizabeth City; seven grandchildren, Jamie Colson and husband Tracy, Michael Whitehurst and wife Sherry, Christopher Whitehurst and wife Mandy, Jennifer Bronson and husband James, Jonathan Whitehurst and wife Julie, Haley James and Jason Perry and wife Nanda; 10 great-grandchildren, Justin Decastillia, Kristen Whitehurst, Sierra Decastillia, Ashley Colson, Nic Thigpen, Hunter Colson, Emily Bronson, Harrison Bronson, Matthew and Breena Perry. He was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers. A graveside funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with Oliver Cartwright officiating. The William Clarence Jackson VFW Post No. 6060 will render military honors at the graveside. The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Twiford's Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church St., Elizabeth City, and other times at the home of his daughter, 141 Island Road, South Mills.
