Atlas Baker Obituary


Atlas J. Baker VIRGINIA BEACH - Atlas Jahue Baker, 72, went to be with the Lord Sept. 19, 2008. He passed away at home in Virginia Beach with his family by his side. He was the son of the late Atlas A. Baker and Ethel Whaley Baker. Though born in Magnolia, N.C., he spent most of his life in Norfolk and Virginia Beach. He was predeceased by his wife, Kathleen Greer Baker. He retired from Sears, Roebuck & Co. after 35 years of service. His greatest passion was being with his family and precious dog, Sugarfoot. He is survived by his four daughters, Debbie Orbach and husband Jacob, Donna Crofton and husband Robert, Joy Strickland and husband Leonard, all of Virginia Beach, Melissa Rogers and husband Jim of Chesapeake; two stepsons, William J. Bryan and Wayne A. Bryan of Richmond; two sisters, Lena Clarise Gray of Rangeley, Maine and Nellie Loraell Nelson of Norfolk; 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, 4889 Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Virginia Beach SPCA.
