Charles R. Peterson NORFOLK - Dr. Charles Raymond Peterson died Sept. 30, 2008, at Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center following a long illness. He was 77. Charles was born in Rockford, Ill., to Raymond Clifford Peterson and Lillie Bloom Peterson. He attended Rockford schools and Northwestern University. His medical degree was earned at George Washington University, where he was president of his junior class and a member of Alpha Omega Alpha. His training continued as an intern at Highland Alameda County Hospital in Oakland, Calif., and he completed his service requirement of two years in the Navy at Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base. Dr. Peterson returned to George Washington to complete his specialty training in physical medicine and rehabilitation. Following this, he received a fellowship to study for a year at the Royal Free Hospital in London. He remained in academic medicine his entire career teaching first at Balfour University School of Medicine in Houston. In 1972, he became professor and chairman of the PM and R department at the University of Missouri Medical School in Columbia, Mo. He held the same position at Eastern Virginia Medical School from 1982 until his retirement. Surviving Charles are his wife of 53 years, Jean; his children, Sarah Schuette and husband Daniel of Lohman, Mo., Charles Nye of Suffolk and Anne and Parke Martin of Norfolk. He also leaves a sister, Joanne Johnson and husband Donald of Woodstock, Ill. He loved his life as a husband, father and especially grandfather of Lauren Schuette Dial, her husband Christopher, Steven Michael Schuette, Kyle Patrick Peterson and Matthew Colin Peterson Charles was a man of many interests and talents, but will be remembered most for his generous spirit, his gentleness, his appreciation of people and his humility. A graveside service for the immediate family will be held at Eastern Shore Chapel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Andrews Episcopal Church-Outreach Projects. H.D.
