Rodney Shields Obituary


Rodney E. Shields Jr. NORFOLK - Rodney Elwood Shields Jr., 69, went to be with the Lord Oct. 1, 2008, in a local hospital. He was born in Norfolk and was the son of the late Rodney Elwood Shields Sr. and Margaret Whitehurst Shields. Rodney was a retired business owner. He graduated from Granby High School and grew up in Park Place United Methodist Church and later became a member of First Baptist Church of Norfolk. His love of flying and boating in the Chesapeake Bay enabled him to live his life to the fullest as well as overcome many medical hardships. Rodney was a loving husband and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Kay Birsch Shields; three sons, Rodney Troy Shields and his wife Angela of Portsmouth, Scott McKinley Shields and his wife Heidi of Suffolk and David Elwood Shields and his wife Diane of Norfolk; three grandchildren, McKinley Kay, Keagan Scott and Spencer Garland. The family would like to thank all doctors, friends, Christian brothers and sisters who were instrumental in his care as well as all prayers and concerns shown over the many years. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in First Baptist Church of Norfolk. The family will be at Cox Funeral Home Saturday from 7 to 8 p.m. for a visitation with friends. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church, 312 Kempsville Road, Norfolk, VA 23502 or to the American Diabetes Association, 870 Greenbrier Circle, Greenbrier Tower II, Suite 404, Chesapeake, VA 23320.
