Mary Davis Obituary


Mary A. Davis SUFFOLK - Mary A. Davis of 2009 Timberlake Drive, took the Master's hand peacefully Oct. 1, 2008, in Sentara Obici Hospital, Suffolk. Mrs. Davis was the daughter of the late Frank E. and Dulah Luke Owens. She was the widow of Benjamin L. Davis Jr. She attended the public schools of Suffolk and graduated from Nansemond Collegiate Institute. She held a bachelor's of science degree from Hampton University, Hampton, Va., and a master's of arts from New York University, New York City. She taught in the public school system for 37 years before retiring. Mary was a loving, sweet and pleasant lady who always greeted you with a big smile. Mrs. Davis held memberships with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., La Vogue Club, District T. Retired Teachers Association and the Suffolk branch of the NAACP, being a lifetime member. Mrs. Davis was a dedicated member of First Baptist Church Mahan Street, Suffolk. Mary was predeceased by her brothers, Wayman Owens and Frank Carlton Owens Jr. and sisters, Ruth Jackson and Bemyce Owens Wynn. She leaves to cherish precious memories one son, Michael L. Davis Sr.; one devoted grandson, Michael L. Davis Jr. and wife Tina of Suffolk; one sister, Allene Griffith (William) of Baltimore; one sister-in-law, Doris Owens of Suffolk; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and numerous friends. A wake is scheduled for Sunday at 6 p.m. in Crocker Funeral Home, Suffolk. A celebration of life will be conducted Monday at noon in First Baptist Church Mahan Street, Suffolk, with the Rev. Steven G. Blunt officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30 a.m. Monday. The procession to the church will leave from the residence. Interment will be in Carver Memorial Cemetery.
