Iris First Obituary

Iris H. First CHESAPEAKE - Iris Holand First went peacefully to her heavenly home Oct. 2, 2008, at 10:06 p.m. after a 5-year struggle with throat cancer and its complications. Iris was a strong and independent woman who faced life and death on her own terms. She was an incredible force to reckon with and is absolutely unforgettable. She is survived by her precious daughter, Susan Crane, her husband, Larry and their children, Matthew and Elizabeth; and a grandson, Michael R. First Jr. and his mother, Lois First. She was predeceased by her devoted husband, Richard and loving son, Michael R. First Sr., who drowned July 10, 2002. She leaves behind many friends, golfing partners and her constant companion Mickey, her cat. Iris retired from the Supply Department Norfolk Naval Shipyard with 35 years of service. She was the treasurer of the Supply Department Alumni Association. For 18 years she was the ballroom dance instructor at the Armed Forces Staff College. She enjoyed slalom water skiing on the Nottaway River until age 62. She then started golfing and was a member of Eagle Haven Women's Golf Association at Naval Amphibious Base, Little Creek. She was also a member of Holy Communion Lutheran Church. A memorial service to honor and celebrate her life will be conducted by Chaplain Deb Jenkins of Bon Secours Hospice at Loving Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel, Sunday Oct. 12, at 3 p.m. Online condolences may be made at www.lovingfuneralhome.com.

Susan, you have our most heartfelt sympathy in the passing of your mom. Even though years and circumstances seperated us, through our Aunt Grace I was able to stay connected. I have never forgotten you. She has my number if you need it.
