Nancy Ballard

Nancy E. Ballard VIRGINIA BEACH - Nancy Ellen Ballard, 97, passed away Oct. 5, 2008. Born in Willis Wharf, Va., she was the daughter of the late Lottie Chard Ballard and Warren Allan Ballard. She worked as an associate professor and mental health coordinator of the Psychiatric Nursing Department of the University of Virginia Medical Center from 1965-76. Miss Ballard attended Oberlin Conservatory of Music, graduated from the Norfolk General Hospital School of Nursing in 1938, received her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing education from University of Pittsburgh, and her master's degree in nursing education with a major in psychiatric nursing from Catholic University in Washington, D.C. She also was an assistant professor of psychiatric nursing and was the mental health coordinator at Ohio State University from 1960-65. Besides her professional endeavors, she very much enjoyed gardening, sewing and music. Left to cherish her memory are three nieces, Nancy McCann Marcus of Danbury, Conn., Jacquelyn McCann Radcliffe of Cambridge, Md., and Mary Knouff Linn of Village Mills, Texas; and a nephew, U.S. Air Force Col. Warren Knouff of Pinehurst, N.C. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Scotia Knouff Waite and Mary B. McCann. A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday in the Holy Trinity Chapel of Westminster-Canterbury on the Bay in Virginia Beach. She will be buried at a graveside service Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Belle Haven Cemetery, Belle Haven, Va. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Westminster-Canterbury Employee Emergency Fund, 3100 Shore Drive, Virginia Beach, VA 23451.
