C. Whitley Obituary


C. Rowland Whitley CARRSVILLE - C. Rowland Whitley, 85, a native of Isle of Wight County, Virginia, passed away peacefully Oct. 7, 2008, at Southampton Memorial Hospital. He was predeceased by his parents, Elvin H. Whitley and Mary Lankford Whitley; two brothers, Harold Whitley and Oliver Whitley; and two sisters, Sallie Mae Holland and Mary Louise Whitley. He is survived by several nieces, nephews and very special caregivers, Robert and Kathy Lankford. He was godfather to his great-nieces, Sally Mae Holland and Jennifer M. Willoughby. Rowland was a retired farmer and worked for the Virginia Agricultural Dept. He was a member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church, Sons of Confederate Veterans (Urquhart-Gillette Camp No. 1471), Veterans of Foreign Wars and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. A funeral will be conducted Friday at 3 p.m. in Beaver Dam Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to the Hunterdale Christian Church Organ Fund, 741 Hunterdale Road, Franklin, VA 23851. Sturtevant Funeral Home, Bennetts Creek Chapel, Suffolk, is handling arrangements. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.SturtevantFuneralHome.com.

I am sorry of hear of Rowland's death. He was a classmate of my mother's. The group would get together on a regular basis, sometimes at Rowland's home. He was always a delight to be around and made you feel welcome. I know he will be missed by each of you. My prayers and thoughts are with each of you.

I AM VERY SORRY FOR THE LOSS OF ROWLAND. HE WAS A FINE PERSON WHO NEVER MET A STRANGER. HE WILL BE MISSED BY MANY FRIENDS, AND I AM PROUD TO SAY HE WAS ONE TO ME.
