Frances Owings Obituary


Frances W. Owings VIRGINIA BEACH - Frances W. Owings, 91, of the 3100 block of Shore Drive, passed away Monday, Oct. 13, 2008, at a local hospital. Born in Newberry, S.C., to the late Clarence and Ann Wertz, Frances was a retired teacher with Norfolk Public Schools where she taught for 30 years. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the Fidelis Epsilon Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa. Frances was the widow of James A. Owings and is survived by two daughters, Ann Owings Farr and husband Roger of Virginia Beach and Ellen Owings Ellett and husband Bo of Mechanicsville, Va.; four grandsons, Scott Ellett and wife Kim of Mechanicsville, Doug Ellett and wife Helen of Victoria, Texas, Matthew Farr and wife Erin of Derwood, Md., and John Farr and wife Christi of San Diego, Calif.; son-in-law, Larry Wright of Richmond; six great-grandchildren, Brittney and Jordan Ellett, Kelsey and Bo Ellett, Shannon Farr and Cameron Fentress; and dear friend and companion for seven years, Dr. Robert J. Stewart. She was predeceased by a daughter, Dee Owings Wright. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel, with the Rev. Stephen M. Ratliff and Rev. Dr. Richard J. Keever. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Westminster Canterbury Fellowship Fund, 3100 Shore Drive, Virginia Beach, VA 23451 in Mrs. Owings' name.
