Alice Luhring Obituary

Alice C. Luhring VIRGINIA BEACH - Alice Crenshaw Luhring, 83, passed away Oct. 13, 2008, in her home after an extended illness. She was born in Washington, D.C., to the late Capt. Russell Sydnor Crenshaw and Polly Robins Crenshaw. A child of a naval officer, Mrs. Luhring lived in various cities on the East and West coasts. Following graduation from Hood College in Frederick, Md., and her marriage to Henry G. Luhring Jr., she settled in Norfolk. She was an avid painter, specializing in portraiture. She participated in the first Virginia Beach Boardwalk Art Show and many ones thereafter. She inspired a passion for art in family and friends through her example and by teaching classes. She worked for 10 years with her husband in her son Rusty's software business in Alexandria, returning to the Virginia Beach area to be close to her son, Hank and his family. A pianist, her love of music inspired her children and grandchildren. Survivors include her children, Henry G. Luhring III of Virginia Beach, Russell C. Luhring and wife Laurie Cushman of Alexandria, Anne L. Briggs and husband Paul of Lexington, Ky.; daughter-in-law, Celeste Luhring; sister, Sally Berkeley Southerland of Virginia Beach; brothers, Russell S. Crenshaw Jr. of Draydon, Md., and Francis N. Crenshaw of Norfolk; and 12 grandchildren, Kelly, Russell, Nicholas and wife Nicole and Thomas Luhring, Daniel and Adam Luhring, Alyssa, Nathan, Kathryn, Abigail, Charlotte and Peter Briggs. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry G. Luhring Jr. and sons, Frederick N. Luhring and Mark B. Luhring. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday in Old Donation Episcopal Church, 4449 N. Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach, with the Rev. Robert J. Randall Jr. officiating. Family will receive friends following the service in the parish hall. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages memorial donations to the Mission of the Holy Spirit (a Norfolk outreach program for urban youth), P.O. Box 1427, Norfolk, VA 23501-1427.
