John Reed

John Moore Reed NEWPORT NEWS - John Moore Reed, 46, passed away Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008, at his residence in Newport News. Mr. Reed was a native of Towaco, N.J., and had been a resident of Newport News for the past 23 years. Mr. Reed was a design architect, graduating in 1985 from Pratt Institution in Brooklyn, N.Y. Also during his four-year education, Mr. Reed studied in Rome, Italy. After graduating, he was the project manager for The Chapman Company for four years, when in 1990 he started his own company, Reed Design. In 1992, Mr. Reed became a partner with Burkhart Thomas Reed PC & Architect & Partner. John thoroughly enjoyed his job, but also loved reading as one of his pastime activities. He was a member of the International Code Council and National Trust for Historic Preservation. He received numerous awards; in 1999 he received HRACRE, Award of Merit, Riddle Honda, City of Norfolk Design Review, Bakers Crust Bread Market, 1999, HRACRE, Award of Merit, Eckerd Drug at The Center Shops, 2002, HRACRE, Community Support Award, Sugar Plum Bakery, 2003 and in 2006 he received the City of Virginia Beach Design Award, Linxx Academy. Mr. Reed was preceded in death by his father, Mason D. Reed Jr. Survivors include his mother, Daisy Moore Reed, formerly of Newport News and currently of Towaco, N.J.; sister, Melissa Kay Reed of Towaco; uncle, William Haskins of Newport News; cousins, David, Chris and Billy Haskins and Tracy, David, Gary and Joey Fitzgerald and Jerry, Cathy, Billy, Scott and Mark Leatherwood. The family will receive friends Saturday from 2 to 3 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home. Memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. Burial will be private.
