James Burden Obituary


James M. Burden CHESAPEAKE - James M. Burden, 84, died Oct. 17, 2008. Born in Springfield, Ill., he was the son of William and Dora Burden. He was predeceased by his wife, Jean; four brothers; three sisters and a son-in-law, Jay McVay. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1941 serving duty in the Pacific Theater of World War II and the Korean War. After retiring from military service, Jim owned and operated the Virginia Reel Restaurant until his retirement in 1976. He was an avid golfer for the greater part of 69 years and was known to family and friends as "The Grey Fox." He was a member of the Greenbrier Country Club and played at many local clubs including Bide-a-Wee, Kempsville, Lake Wright and Ocean View. He is survived by his wife, Dickie L. Burden; daughters, Linda B. Payne, Betty McVay and Jeanne Randolph and husband Don; a son, James M. Burden II and wife Deb; a granddaughter, Lori Jean Payne; four grandsons, Christopher McVay, John, Joseph and Andrew Randolph; and 10 great-grandchildren. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in the Great Bridge Chapel of Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, 653 Cedar Road, Chesapeake. The Rev. Charles Moseley will officiate. The viewing will begin Monday with the family receiving friends from 10 to 11 a.m. one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the ASPCA. Friends are invited to view the service via live webcast and to sign the online guestbook at www.omanfh.com.
