Rachel Fatherly Obituary


Rachel Jones Fatherly CHESAPEAKE - Rachel Jones Fatherly, 81, of the 2300 block of Ardmore Ave., went to be with the Lord Oct. 27, 2008, in Norfolk. A native of Franklinton, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Howell G. and Pearl Wilder Jones and the wife of the late James Henry Fatherly III. She was a faithful member of South Norfolk Baptist Church where she was a member and former director of the Women's Missionary Union, leader of the Zack Deal Circle and Inreach coordinator of the church. She served as pianist of the Chesapeake First Senior Citizens Club. During World War II, she served as a plane spotter for the U.S. Armed Forces. Known throughout Tidewater as "The Weather Bird," she kept a daily weather diary since 1975. Surviving are five daughters, Patricia Cohen of Plantation, Fla.; Diana Watkins and her husband John and Teresa Yaeger and her husband Joseph, all of Chesapeake; Robin Good and her husband Walt of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and P. Ruth Hamilton and her husband Ray of Caldwell, Idaho; a son, Roger Fatherly and his wife Kathy of Gates, N.C.; two sisters, Ruth Harris of Woodstock, Ga., and Hazel Kearney of Oxford, N.C.; two brothers, Howell Lee Jones of Raleigh, N.C., and Royal W. Jones of Franklinton, N.C.; 15 grandchildren and three great- grandchildren. A funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in South Norfolk Baptist Church with the Rev. David E. Slayton and Mr. Ted Nance officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Graham Funeral Home, Greenbrier Chapel, Thursday from 7 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, South Norfolk Baptist Church, 1101 Chesapeake Ave., Chesapeake, VA 23324.
