Reather Newsome Obituary


Reather B. Newsome PORTSMOUTH - Reather Bush Newsome, 94, of the 1500 block of Basie Crescent, died Oct. 25, 2008, in Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center. A native of Roxobel, N.C., she was the widow of Charles E. Newsome and a member of Celestial Baptist Church, where she was involved with the Eliza Jones Missionary Society, Jolly Workers Club, Bereavement Committee and Senior Station. Mrs. Newsome retired from the Webb Center Cafeteria at Old Dominion University in 1980 and was also a member of Household of Ruth No. 5927 and Grand United Order of Odd Fellows. Survivors include her daughter, Gloria N. Payton (Willie L. Payton) of Virginia Beach; a sister, Mozella Pettiford of Portsmouth; grandson, Ronald Newsome (Hope) of Orlando, Fla.; two great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Emily Mitchell of Portsmouth; daughter-in-law, Miriam Ruth Newsome of Panama City, Fla.; other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her son, James E. Newsome. A funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Celestial Baptist Church, Portsmouth, with the Rev. Leon J. Boone officiating. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Fisher Funeral Home, 1520 Effingham St., Portsmouth, is in charge. Viewing will begin Friday at noon. The family will be at the residence. The body will be in the church at 10 a.m. Saturday.
