Mary Ray Obituary


Mary L. Ray PORTSMOUTH - Mary Lillie Ray of the 2800 block of Pinewell St., departed this life at the age of 87 years, on Oct. 29, 2008, at her home. She was born July 24, 1921 in Wilson, N.C., to the late Rosa and Solomon Finch. Mary was united in matrimony to William H. Ray (Coach Ray) on March 29, 1940 and remained faithfully united for 68 years. She was predeceased by her daughter, Rosa Mae Ray; a grandson, Kenneth P. Elliott and granddaughter, Michele Wilson; two brothers and three sisters. She leaves to cherish her memory, a loving husband, William H. Ray; seven daughters, Geraldine Chappelle of St. Mary's, Ga., Mary Hampton of Portsmouth, Joyce Harris of Chesapeake, Beverly Vaughan (Aubrey) of Portsmouth, Nettie Bailey of Chesapeake, Deborah Mason (Willie) of Portsmouth, Arlethia Gallop (Louis) of Portsmouth; two sons, William H. Ray Jr. (Thelma) of Portsmouth and Lawrence Ray (Helen) of Corpus Cove, Texas; a sister, Barbara Battle of Wilson, N.C.; a brother, Charles Finch of Saratoga, N.C.; 30 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; and three great-great- grandchildren. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Third Baptist Church. The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. today and will receive friends at 2803 Pinewell St., Portsmouth. Corprew Funeral Home is in charge.
