Robert Hewitt Obituary


Robert T. Hewitt FAIRFAX - Robert Thomas Hewitt, 81, of Annandale and Fairfax, a retired official of the Navy Dept., died Oct. 26, 2008, at Virginia Hospital Center of Arlington. Mr. Hewitt was born and raised in Portsmouth. He was a graduate of The College of William & Mary in Virginia and earned a master's degree at George Washington University, Washington, D.C. He served on active duty in the Navy during World War II and was a civilian employee of the Navy in Portsmouth and Norfolk until he came to Washington in 1960 with the Bureau of Ships. His position at retirement was director of the Manpower and Training Support Division in the Naval Sea Systems Command. He was a member of Kappa Alpha Order, a member of the Park View Christian Church in Chesapeake, served on the Board of Directors of YMCA in Portsmouth and was active in basketball officiating, tennis and golf circles in Southeastern Virginia and in Northern Virginia and had a wide circle of very good friends in the Northern Virginia area. Survivors include two daughters, Victoria Gahagan of Cary, N.C., and Elizabeth Olszewski of Fairbanks, Alaska; three grandchildren, Laura Elizabeth Zander of Truckee, Calif., and Katherine Leigh Pritchett and Robert Noel Pritchett of Cary, N.C.; and a sister, Virginia Hewitt Borum Sr. of Chesapeake.
