Winifred Baldwin

Winifred M. Baldwin NORFOLK - Winifred Wilde Hayes Maddock Baldwin, 102, was born in Twin Falls, Idaho. Her mother, Anna Elizabeth Hansen Hayes, was born in Rock Creek, Idaho, and her father, John Edward Hayes, was born in Kirkwood, Mo. She spent most of her formative years in Denver and graduated from the University of Colorado in 1927. In her childhood, she developed a more than average competence with the violin and piano, a love she continued throughout her life. She met her future husband, Robert K. Maddock, in high school and later married him Sept. 30, 1930, in San Francisco in St. James Episcopal Church. He was a physician and commissioned officer in the U.S. Public Health Service. During his years of service until 1956, they lived at 12 separate duty stations. During their service career, Winnie felt that wherever they were, it was to be treated as their permanent home and that she was obliged to be involved in the community. In those days it usually meant volunteer work as a Gray Lady in a local military hospital. When they settled in Norfolk, Winnie championed many civic activities. She was a volunteer at Norfolk General Hospital later to become Sentara Hospital where she earned a 50-year service award and finally retired at the age of 99. She was also involved with the Nursing School and worked with many other charitable organizations. These included King's Daughters and Sons from 1956 to 2006, from which she received a 600-hour service award; National Delta Delta Delta Sorority By-laws committee, Associate Director in 1966, and Chairman for Scholarships; the Pan-Hellenic Conference; the Hermitage Foundation; the Junior League and as their executive vice president; the Navy League; and the Chrysler Museum. She spent a great deal of her time and effort in community music programs including the Virginia Orchestra Group, Tidewater Youth Orchestra of the Norfolk Symphony Association, Virginia Symphony Youth Orchestra, Virginia Philharmonic School for Children, Children's Concert, Old Dominion Symphony Council, Norfolk Symphony and Virginia Symphony. She was especially talented at fund raising and served as secretary on the Virginia Symphony Board. One of her great loves was horseback riding. She was still riding horses up to the age of 100. She was a member of the Southeast Virginia Dressage Association from the 1970s until 2007 and served as a participant, show manager and with their board. Winnie also enjoyed travel that included a number of exotic places. She traveled to all continents of the earth except Antarctica. Dr. Maddock died in 1982 and Winnie married Francis Bernard C. Baldwin, VMI's Class of 1941, Oct.s 25, 1990. He has been a wonderful companion to her. Both enjoyed travel to many places in the world. She is survived by her husband, Frank C. Baldwin; her son, Robert K. Maddock Jr.; her grandchildren, Robert K. Maddock III, Anna Louise Maddock Gooch; and her great-grandchildren, Andrew William Maddock, Steven Lawrence Maddock, Thomas Edmund Maddock, Ian Robert Gooch, Rebecca Elizabeth Gooch and Matthew James Gooch. A celebration of her life will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Christ and St. Luke's Episcopal Church by the Rev. Father Berkley Ford and the Rev. Father Jess Stribling. Entombment will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery Mausoleum. The family requests that memorial contributions may be made to the Virginia Symphony.
