Irma Stevens Obituary


Irma S. Stevens CHARLOTTESVILLE - Irma Ruth Sprouse Stevens, 89, went to be with the Lord Sunday, Nov. 9, 2008, at Martha Jefferson Hospital. Born Jan. 7, 1919, in Charlottesville, she was the daughter of the late James Howell "Happy" Sprouse and Rebecca Ellen "Beck" Childress Sprouse. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Rosabelle Florence "Belle" Sprouse Brown and Helen Louise Sprouse Pond; a brother, James Howell "Toby" Sprouse, Jr.; a sister-in-law, Eloise Elizabeth "Pete" Smith Sprouse; and two brothers-in-law, Harry Jordan Brown Sr. and Harry Carson Pond Sr. Irma was a member of Hinton Avenue Methodist Church and a graduate of Lane High School in 1937 where she played basketball. She was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother, who loved her family dearly. Surviving her are her husband of 61 years, Lewis Benton "Bud" Stevens Jr. of Charlottesville; a son, Lewis Benton Stevens III and his wife Helen Elizabeth "Suzi" Holland Stevens; a granddaughter, Rebecca Lynn Stevens Brich and her husband Stephen; two great-grandsons, Logan Alexander Brich and Zachary Harrison Brich; and many nieces and nephews. A graveside funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Riverview Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Hill and Wood Funeral Home. The family suggests that any desired memorial contributions be made to the Charlottesville- Albemarle Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 160, Charlottesville, VA 22902 or the American Cancer Society, 1445 East Rio Road, Charlottesville, VA 22901. Friends may sign the guestbook at www.hillandwood.com.

Although I only met Mrs Steven a few weeks ago, I feel as though I already knew her. My sister frequently spoke nice things about of her & Mr. Stevens. You have my deepest sympathy.

I had the privilege of meeting Irma last year and right away I knew just how sweet she was. She was always kind and worried about others. I can't imagine just how much she will be missed.
