Lucille Altman Obituary

Lucille Holmes Altman BALTIMORE - Lucille Holmes Altman passed away Nov. 8, 2008, after a long bout with Alzheimer's Disease in Baltimore. She was well-known in the Tidewater area as a professional ballroom dance instructor and a competitive dancer for more than 40 years. Throughout her life, she competed throughout the United States and internationally winning numerous competitions. She owned and operated Arthur Murray dance studio in Norfolk on Granby Street, a Fred Astaire Studio in Portsmouth on High Street and her own Lucille & French studios in Portsmouth and Newport News from 1958 until 1996. Her students came from all sectors of life and many remained students for years, refining their routines and competing in contests similar to TV's "Dancing with the Stars" competition. In her later years, until she was 81, she taught ballroom dancing in the studio in her home in Carrollton. She is survived by her daughter, Faith Beach of Daytona Beach, Fla.; and sons, Larry Holmes of Sykesville, Md., and Brad Altman of Emporia, Va. There are also seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. There will be a private family service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any contributions be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation for research.

Dear Family,

My sincere condolences. Your mom & I shared many laughs together as she spoke so fondly of you her children. Lucille was a wonderful and caring person. She truly loved her work as a dance instructor; and yes she truly did dance with the stars, as she danced through life. We will all miss her in Isle of Wight County. You truly had a precious mom.
