Alma Barber

Alma M. Barber NORFOLK - Alma Vivian Miller Barber departed this life Nov. 9, 2008, after an extended illness. Alma was the daughter of the late Samuel and Hattie D. Miller. She was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School and she briefly attended the Norfolk State extension of Virginia State College. Alma was a lifelong member of St. John's AME Church, where she labored diligently in the kitchen ministry. Alma Barber retired from the City of Norfolk where she worked for 25 years as a dietitian at Lake Taylor Hospital until she retired in 1982. Alma was preceded in death by her six sisters, Dorothy M. Manning, Viola M. Godwin, Louise M. Pretlow, Madge M. Nichols, Madelyn V. Miller and Aline M. Young; four brothers, Samuel E. Miller II, Arthur L. Miller, James L. Miller and Allen Miller. She leaves to cherish her memory two sons, Lawrence A. Westbrook II of Norfolk and Ronald K. Barber of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Evelyn M. Langley of Norfolk and Mildred M. Trahan of New York; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The family will receive friends at the family home, 2505 Tidewater Drive, Norfolk. A wake will be held Thursday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. The homegoing celebration will be held Friday at noon in St. John's AME Church, Bute Street, with the Rev. John D. Burton officiating. Hale Funeral Home is in charge.
