Joseph Arnold Obituary


J. David Arnold III VIRGINIA BEACH - Joseph David Arnold III, 82, died peacefully at his home Nov. 5, 2008, after a long battle with cancer. Born in Bedford County, Virginia, he was the son of Joseph David Arnold II and Beulah Craig Arnold. Dave was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He retired after 42 years as the Southeast Virginia sales representative for McGraw-Hill Information Systems Co. in 1991. He was a longtime, faithful member of Old Donation Episcopal Church where he served in many capacities. He also served on numerous committees in the Diocese of Southern Virginia and the first alumnus to serve on the board of trustees of the Episcopal Boys' Home, Covington, Va. He was an avid sailor and past commodore of the Broad Bay Sailing Association, past president of the International Mobjack Association and an amateur radio operator (K4JQO) since 1956. He is survived by his loving wife, Nancy; daughter, Diana of Bowie, Md.; five sons, David and wife Ginna of Troutville, Va., Stephen and wife Kristine of Satellite Beach, Fla., Mark and wife Debby of Chesapeake, Paul and wife Lynn and Timothy and wife Gwen of Virginia Beach; three stepsons, Charles Smith III and wife Amy of Virginia Beach, Brook Smith and wife Martha of Norfolk, Lt. Col. Collin Smith and wife Marla of Niceville, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Robert and wife Barbara of Woodstock, Va. A celebration of his life will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. in Old Donation Episcopal Church with the Rev. Robert J. Randall Jr., the Rev. Elizabeth M. Felicetti and the Rev. Howard Hanchey officiating. The family would like to thank Drs. Paul Conkling, Greg Clifford and Donald Lynch and their staffs, Heartland Home Health and Hospice for all their kindness, care and support. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Old Donation Cemetery Fund or Boys' Home, 306 Boys' Home Road, Covington, VA 24426. The Cremation Society of Virginia is handling the arrangements. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.pilotonline.com.
