Lucy Knowles Obituary


Lucy Mae Gray Knowles VIRGINIA BEACH - Lucy Mae Gray Knowles, 88, passed away Nov. 9, 2008, surrounded by her family. She was born May 29, 1920, in Avon, N.C., to the late Charlie E. Gray Sr. and Bertha Flowers Gray. She was predeceased by her husband, John Anthony Knowles; her sister, Grace M. Gray; her brother, Robert H. Gray Sr.; and her brother-in-laws, Cyril Gray Sr. and Alvin M. Price. She is survived by her daughter, Linda D. Knowles; her brother, Charlie E. Gray Sr. and wife Evelyn of Virginia Beach; her sister, Ruth G. Price of Virginia Beach; and sister-in-laws, Carolyn Gray of Virginia Beach and Mayfield Salis of Key West, Fla., and their families. A special thank you goes to Catherine Collins who took such great care of Lucy for several years and made sure all her needs were tended to. We would also like to thank the staff at Sentara Windermere for their kindness, care and attention to Lucy. Lucy was raised in Virginia Beach and graduated from Oceana High School in 1929. Later in life, she attended Princess Anne Business College and retired from civil service after working at the Administration Building at Oceana Naval Base. She enjoyed painting, writing poetry and sewing. In her later years, she and her husband John loved to square dance, travel and spend the summers in Frisco, N.C. She belonged to the Oceana High School Alumni Association and was a member of the Virginia Beach Methodist Church. A visitation will be held today from 6 to 8 p.m. at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Chapel. Her funeral will be held Thursday at 11:30 a.m. in the Virginia Beach United Methodist Church, 212 19th St., followed by her interment in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.
