Mark Harford Obituary


Mark H. Harford Jr. HERTFORD - Mark Henry Harford Jr., 83, of Brian Center, of the 1300 block of Don Juan Road, died Nov. 14, 2008, in Chowan Hospital, Edenton. Mr. Harford was born in Norfolk and was the son of the late Mark H. Sr. and Ada Shalhoup Harford. A 1944 graduate of Maury High School, he attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he played football prior to enlisting in the U.S. Navy. A Catholic by faith, he was a member and pilgrim of Norfolk Moose Lodge No. 39 since 1959. Surviving are his wife of nearly 61 years, Gladys Upton Harford; four sisters, Mildred H. Christiansen of Newport News, Evelyn H. Ellis of Virginia Beach, Betty H. Fitzpatrick and husband Edward and Adel H. Williams; a brother, Louis S. Harford and wife Bobbie, all of Norfolk; a sister-in-law, Margaret Upton Jackson of Raytown, Mo.; his special childhood friend, James L. Hogge of Norfolk; and several nieces, nephews and extended family members. A funeral will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, by the Rev. Kenneth Wallace. Burial will be at a later time in Beaver Hill Cemetery. Friends may join the family in the funeral home following the chapel service. Mr. Harford had been selected the "mayor" of Brian Center Health & Rehab and the family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the medical staff and caregivers of that facility for the love and care given to him in these past years.

My deepest sympathy to Mark's family and friends. I had the pleasure of meeting Mark five years ago. He was a very special person; he brought so much joy and happiness to so many lives. He was truly an inspiration to all of us.
