Axie Harrell Obituary


Axie Davis Harrell NORFOLK - On Thursday, Nov. 13, 2008, the Lord sent his his angels down to bring Axie Harrell, 83, of the 700 block of Denison Ave., to her mansion in heaven. She was born March 4, 1925, in Northampton County, North Carolina, to the late Jack and Mamie Davis. She was preceded in death by her two sons, James "Jackie" Harrell and Robert L. Harrell. She was also preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters. Axie Harrell was a longtime member of Second Baptist Church of Poughkeepsie, N.Y. She served as a deaconess and president of the usher board. She was known as the smiling usher at Second Baptist Church. She retired from the Hudson River Psychiatric Unit after 30 years of service as a nurse. Later, after relocating to Norfolk, she joined Mount Pleasant Baptist Church where she served on the Pastor's Aid Ministry and the Nursing Ministry. She was affectionately known as the lady in white, the nurse. She is survived by her daughter, Lillie and a wonderful son-in-law, Willie Rascoe Jr. of Chesapeake. She has nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a very special great-great-grandchild; and two godchildren, Robert Van Duzen Jr. and Lillie Mann. She had a host of nieces, nephews, family members and friends. There is a special niece, Daisy Smith of Norfolk and a special nephew, Ronald Deloatch of Murfreesboro, N.C. She leaves to cherish her memory a sister-in-Christ, Juanita Greenwood of Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Arrangements are under the professional care and direction of Graves Funeral Home. A funeral will be at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, 934 W. Little Creek Road, Norfolk, officiated by Pastor William L. Davis, at 11 a.m. Tuesday. The family will receive guests at her residence.
