John Carty Obituary


John J. Carty NORFOLK - John Joseph "Joe" Carty, 94, died Nov. 29, 2008, in a local hospital. A native and lifelong resident of Norfolk, Mr. Carty retired from the Norfolk Fire Department after 30 years of service. His trade was printing and he worked many years for Ideal Printing Company. Mr. Carty was a member of the Fairmount Park United Methodist Church and the Good Shepherd Bible Class for which he served as treasurer for more than a decade. He also carried meals to the sick and the shut-in by participating in Mobile Meals of Norfolk. Survivors include his wife of 74 years, Jeannette Bear Carty; a daughter and her husband, Fay and John A. Muldoon of Norfolk; a son, George "Bert" Carty of Wixom, Mich.; a daughter-in-law, Kathleen M. Carty of Colonial Heights, Va.; three grandchildren and four great- grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, the Rev. John F. Carty and his first wife Barbara M. Carty; a sister, Mary C. Wood; three brothers, George, Lawrence and Stacy Carty; and a grandson. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel. A graveside service will be conducted Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. in Forest Lawn Cemetery by the Rev. William D. Bruner. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com.
