Alvin Young Obituary

Alvin R. Young Sr. VIRGINIA BEACH - Alvin Raymond Young Sr., 83, passed away in his home surrounded by his family Dec. 1, 2008, after a courageous battle with cancer. Raymond was the son of Albert Draper and Ida Irene Young, both deceased. Upon graduation from high school, Raymond enlisted in the U.S. Army, fought in the Battle of Iwo Jima and was awarded the Bronze Star for his service. After the war, Raymond received a law degree from T.C. Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond. He was the Director of Real Estate for the Atlantic Division Naval Facilities Engineering Command for 32 years. For the next 22 years, Raymond practiced real estate and family law, which gave him true enjoyment by helping others using his professional knowledge and personal wisdom. Raymond leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 62 years, Nora Beatrice Cassell; their daughter, Sharon Young Cruthers and husband Barry; two sons, Alvin Raymond Young Jr. and his wife Nina and Douglas Willis Young and his wife Cathy; five grandchildren, Robin Altice McCullough (husband Michael), Jason Altice (wife Lisa), Cara Young Pratt (husband John), Kathryn Young Kressel (husband Michael) and T.J. Young (wife Lindsay); two great-grandchildren, Aidan Ross McCullough and Mason Douglas Young; his two sisters, Betty Wills and Jane Curfman; and two brothers, Albert Young and Vernon Young, survive him. He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Howard Young and Ross Young. Raymond had an integral presence in a very large, close-knit family and friends. He was well-known for his generosity, sharing his vast knowledge of history, the sciences and upholding personal integrity as a true gentleman. Raymond held his family as being his greatest pride and accomplishment. He will forever be remembered as a devoted husband, father and grandfather and will be sorely missed. Family and friends will gather from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home, Witchduck Road. A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in the funeral home. The interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Chesapeake Beach Volunteer Fire and Rescue Dept. Inc., P.O. Box 5674, Virginia Beach, VA 23471.

The Young family has been a special part of my life for many years--and after attending the celebration of Grandma Young's life today--it is no wonder that there are so many special Youngs. May God Bless you all during this time of grief at the loss of Raymond as well as Grandma Young. My sincerest sympathies.
