Nora Spencer Obituary

Nora P. Spencer CHESAPEAKE - Nora Dean Patrick Spencer went gently to rest Dec. 5, 2008, surrounded by her loving family in the soothing comfort of her light-filled sunroom. She was born in Gum Neck, N.C., on March 5, 1932, the daughter of Charles Floyd Patrick and Sadie Lee Jones Patrick. She was a 1950 graduate of Columbia High School in Columbia, N.C., and attended Rex Hospital School of Nursing before marrying her high school sweetheart, Denton Berline "Catfish" Spencer. Nora was an administrative secretary at Bank of Virginia. After retiring, she also worked at Leggett's and was a volunteer at Chesapeake General Hospital. She was a member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church in Virginia Beach, where she was active in the Women's Bible Study Group, and the Lifestyle Center at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center. She was an avid reader, had many life interests and enjoyed special friendships with people at work, church, the Lifestyle Center and AARP. She especially enjoyed her beach house in Kill Devil Hills, N.C., with her family, where she spent most summers. Her radiant smile would light the room and her laughter would fill your heart with happiness. She was truly an inspiration to her family and friends. In addition to her husband of 58 years, she is survived by her children, Beverly Jo Spencer and Susan Kuehnle Wilson, Jeffery Blake Spencer and Teresa Nancy Beilsmith and Randy Lane Spencer and Susan H. Spencer, all of Chesapeake, and Gregory Marc Spencer of Washington, D.C.; sister, Vera Patrick Clough of Columbia; granddaughter, Tracy S. Heath and her husband Jesse and their children, Taylor Lynn, Maddison Khrystine and Jesse Lee Jr. of Bell Buckle, Tenn.; grandson, Shaun Michael Richardson of Chesapeake; granddaughter, Chelsea Nicole Richardson and her daughter Marlie Cheyenne Johnson of Chesapeake; nephew and nieces, Aubrey Whitt Tarkington Jr., Ricki J. Craddock and Tobi C. Kirkman of Columbia and April C. Vaughn of Kitty Hawk, N.C., and their families; aunt, Irma Jones of Virginia Beach; and numerous cousins. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Eastminster Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. David Zavadil and the Rev. Bob Hobson. Burial will follow at Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends in Hollomon-Brown, Indian River Chapel, Monday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The family offers its grateful appreciation to the nurses and other staff of the Lifestyle Center, Chesapeake Regional Medical Center and Chesapeake Hospice Care for their support, professionalism and quality caregiving and Angela Moore, Nora's nurse at home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be made to Chesapeake Regional Home Care Hospice Services and Eastminster Presbyterian Church.
