Ella Powell Obituary
Ella Smith Powell WINDSOR - Ella Smith Powell, 93, of the 700 block of Belmont St., died Dec. 11, 2008, in Bertie Memorial Hospital. Ella was born in New Bern, N.C., Sept. 12, 1915, to the late John Ivey and Ella Piggott Smith and was predeceased by her husband, J.S. Powell Sr. She was a homemaker and member of Cashie Baptist Church. Survivors include daughters, Chris P. Glasgow and husband Wilson of Charlotte, N.C., Julia P. Blackwelder and husband Chuck of Wilmington, N.C.; sons, Jack Powell Jr. and wife Adalia of Windsor, Bill Powell and wife Agnes of Merry Hill, N.C.; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. The Rev. Reese Blanchett will hold a funeral Saturday at 11 a.m. in Cashie Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Edgewood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home, 704 Belmont St., from 7 until 9 p.m. today. Memorial gifts may be made to the Cashie Baptist Church, Memorial Fund, 221 South Queen St. Windsor, NC 27983. Condolences may be directed to www.walkerfu.net. Walker Funeral Home is serving the Powell family.

Betty and I were always pleased to be in the presence of Ella Powell. Her son, Jack, married my sister, Adalia. Ella displayed a warm, glowing personality. She should have been employed by the Windsor Chamber of Commerce to welcome new residents to the community. We pray God's peace and presence be experienced as the family tries to adjust to life without this dear lady.

As a small child who loved to dance, sing and tell stories, I always appreciated my Aunt Violet and her friends Betty and Ella who encouraged my odd ball talents. I was "a little bitty thing" as they called me, but I remember Ella's warmth and enjoyment of all of our antics, the grandchildren of the Lassiters, and the nieces and nephews of Robert and Violet White. I bet Ella, Violet and Betty are smiling upon us now, as we remember...In gratitude

Ella Powell was a blessing to me and my sisters and my wife ! What a gracious woman. Will look forward to seeing her and Aunt Violet talking a blue streak when Jesus "steps out on the clouds". Amen.

All our extended "Windsor family" has really meant a great deal to us all these years. I echo my cousin Ray's mention of how great it was of Ella to host us all after the burial services for Aunt Violet (White) some years ago. Everyone in Violet and Bob's "circle" was always so nice and welcoming to us when we visited there growing up. Ella was definitely one of Windsor's "special angels."

All the Lassiter's thought so much of Ella and Jack Powell. They were the greatest of hosts for many occasions when we visited Windsor. We love and miss all the wonderful people of Windsor. Another special Angel is in Heaven. Hugs to all of you from myself and my daughter, Laura.

Dear Powell Family,
I would have attended your mother's service had I known in time. I loved your parents very much. They always made us feel special when we visited each summer. Your mother was so kind to host all of us when Aunt Violet passed away. I miss Windsor and its wonderful people very much. Your mom would be at the top of my list. She was one in a million. Am certain the Lord has a special place set aside just for her.
