Levi Powell Obituary


Levi O. Powell CHESAPEAKE - Levi O. "Tweety" Powell, 86, of Eason Road, beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend to many passed away Jan. 10, 2009, at the Hampton Veterans Administration Palliative Care Center. He was educated and lived in New York City and was a resident of Chesapeake since 1991. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II and was stationed in the Philippines. He worked as a commercial printer/bookbinder and retired in 1990. In his retirement, he refinished furniture at Mitchell's Complete Upholstery until 2006. Lee is survived by Floria "Tweety," his wife of 53 years; six daughters, Deloys "Sissie" Robinson (Earlie), the Rev. Marilyn Carroll, Rozlyn Leslie (Peter), Carolyn Powell-Rivers (Nathaniel), Gwendolyn Hillard (Tyrone) and Jacquelyn Powell. Lee was a wonderful and loving grandfather to eight grandchildren, Dana Koerner, Darnell Powell (Jessica), Satia and Jon Rivers, Tamara, Travis and Levi Withers, Maurice Williams; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Arnold A. Powell; and a host of nieces and nephews including those to whom he was like a father. He was predeceased by Christina S. Powell. The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at New Willow Grove Baptist Church, 841 St. Brides Road W., Chesapeake, VA 23322. A homegoing celebration of his life will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. with viewing to take place at 9:30 a.m. at the church. Interment will immediately follow the service at New Willow Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
