Jennie Turner Obituary


Jennie M. Turner NEWARK, Del. - Jennie Benton Mapp Turner, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, 91, passed away peacefully Jan. 12, 2009, at home surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Franktown, Va., Dec. 30, 1917, to the late Ivan Doughty Mapp Sr. and the late Jennie Benton Savage Mapp. She resided in Nassawadox, Va., until 1966 when she and her family moved to Newark, Del. She retired in 1985 from the University of Delaware where she worked as a laboratory assistant in the Animal Science and Agricultural Biochemistry laboratories. Jennie was a member of Franktown United Methodist Church in Franktown and Kingswood United Methodist Church in Newark, Del. Jennie was predeceased by her loving husband of 61 years, Burleigh Brae Turner Jr., who passed away in 1999 and her brother, John A. Mapp, who passed away in 2005. Jennie is survived by a son, Burleigh B. Turner III and his wife Kris of Baltimore; a daughter, Anne T. Fitzgerald of Newark, Del.; two sons, Ivan M. Turner Sr. and his wife Linda of Silver Beach, Va., and James M. Turner of Newark; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother, Ivan Doughty Mapp Jr. and his wife Catherine of Virginia Beach; a brother, Joseph Savage Mapp and his wife Pat of Onancock, Va.; an aunt, Louise Mapp Johnson of Onancock; and many nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held Saturday, Jan. 24, at 2 p.m. in Belle Haven Cemetery, Belle Haven, Va. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Franktown United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 130, Franktown, VA 23354 or the Hospice & Palliative Care of the Eastern Shore, 165 Market St., Suite No. 3, Onancock, VA 23417. Arrangements by B.D. Holland Funeral Home, Nassawadox.
