Richard McComb Obituary


Richard B. McComb NORFOLK - Richard B. McComb, 89, passed away Jan. 13, 2009, in Norfolk. A native of Des Moines, Iowa, he was the son of the late Robert and Rilla McComb and the widower of Loretta L. McComb. He retired from the United States Navy as a chief boatswainsmate after 23 years of service. He also retired from the Base Police as a sergeant after 22 years of service. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association, Post 360 and was a lifetime member of the VFW in Ocean View. He was one of "The Greatest Generation" having served in World War II on the USS IDAHO. He was a great husband, dad and grandfather. He is survived by his three daughters, Loretta L. Merritt and husband Leonard and Kem E. McComb, both of Norfolk and Margaret A. King of Louisiana; a brother, Robert McComb and wife Thelma of North Carolina; 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Patti. He was predeceased by a daughter, Maureen D. McClain. A graveside service will be conducted Saturday at 1 p.m. in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, today from 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.
