Agnes Eley CHESAPEAKE - Mother Agnes Eley, 99, of the 200 block of Eley Street, was called home to be with the Lord Jan. 17, 2009. She was born June 1, 1909. She was a member of Grove Baptist Church where she served as the Spiritual Mother of the church. Mother Eley also served with the Diaconate Ministry, Missionary Ministry and was a former member of the Newsletter Ministry. She was the former first lady of New Light Baptist Church. She was a member of the Love and Charity Lodge and the Eastern Star. Mother Eley was married to the late Dr. John H. Eley and to this union 13 children were born: John T. Eley (Ruth), Agnes M. Jordan (Louis), Eulus Eley, Richard L. Eley (Pamela), all of Chesapeake, William H. Eley (Mary), Ulric L. Eley (Carolyn), both of Portsmouth, Herbert Eley of Manhattan, Kan., Aquila E. Wiggins (Melvin) of Jacksonville, Fla., Reginald D. Eley (Valora) of Piedmont, S.C. She was predeceased by two sons, Theodore M. Eley and Robert Eley and two daughters, Sarah F. Hopkins and Angel Eley. Mother Eley's memory will also be cherished by 31 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. Viewing will be held from 2 until 7 p.m. Thursday in J.T. Fisher Funeral Services, 1080 N. George Washington Hwy., Chesapeake. A life celebration service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Grove Baptist Church, 5910 W. Norfolk Road, Portsmouth, with Dr. Melvin O. Marriner, senior pastor, officiating.
