Evelyn Smith Obituary

Evelyn J. Hall Smith NORFOLK - Evelyn Joyce Hall Smith peacefully slipped into eternal rest Jan. 17, 2009, surrounded by family. Evelyn was born in Norfolk on Aug. 7, 1928, to the late Sidney Hall and Mildred Perry. She was educated in Norfolk Public Schools and retired from the city school system in the mid-70s. She was a member of Wesley Union AME Zion Church where she sang in the choir and was active on the usher board until her health began to fail. She was also a member of the ladies auxiliary of ILA local 1248. Evelyn was predeceased by her husband, David "Cupcake" Smith and two sons, David "GoGo" Smith and Lionel "Tab" Smith. Evelyn is survived by three daughters, Brenda Hall, Dale Diane Burke (James), Juanita Browne; one son, Sidney Smith (Kathy) and Carl Lark who was like a son; nine grandchildren, Damon, Simbiat, Dominic, Lioniece, Phillip, Justin, Brittany, Cory, Arielle; four great-grandchildren: Paris, Titianna, Eljiah, Dymoni; daughters-in-law, Joanne Ricks Smith and Wanda Smith; brother-in-law, Arlee Smith; two sisters-in-law, Emma Smith and Geraldine Burton; special friends, Cleo and Joe Wright and Willie Mae Reid. The homegoing celebration will be held at noon Saturday in Wesley Union AME Zion Church, 708 Johnson Ave., Norfolk. The Rev. Willie Dixon will officiate. The viewing will be held 2 to 7 p.m. Friday at Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, Chesapeake, where the family will receive guests from 6 to 7 p.m. We invite you to send a condolence message in the family's guestbook at www.pretlowandsosn.com. The family sends a special thanks to the Sentara hospice team.
