Michael Moreland Obituary

Michael E. Moreland CHESAPEAKE - Dr. Michael E. Moreland, 61, died peacefully Jan. 21, 2009. Dr. Moreland was born in Inglewood, Calif., the son of June Marie Moreland and the late Eugene Francis Moreland. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Loyola University of Los Angeles in June 1969, and his Doctor of Medicine degree from Creighton University, Omaha, Neb., in May 1973. He served a residency in dermatology at Bethesda Naval Hospital and on active duty in various assignments in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps. Upon his release from active duty as a commander in 1980, he was active in the private practice of dermatology in the Churchland area for almost 29 years until his recent illness. He was a longtime member of the Cedar Point Golf Club and Elizabeth Manor Golf & Country Club. He was a member of the Church of the Resurrection, Portsmouth. Mike Moreland excelled at "Service Above Self" as a member of the Churchland Rotary Club. While he held every office in the local club and served the whole Rotary district as district governor, it was his efforts in serving others that made Mike standout as a Rotarian. He led efforts in other countries with hands-on medical treatment plus the creation of permanent treatment facilities. He surpassed the highest level of giving as a Paul Harris Fellow, was recognized as a Major Donor, a Rotary Benefactor, and a member of the Paul Harris Society. Mike's efforts in helping others were recognized by the Churchland Rotary Club with a scholarship named in his honor. Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Stephanie Webb Moreland; his mother, June M. Moreland of Simi Valley, Calif.; three children, Erin Moreland Lambesis and husband Christopher of Phoenix, Ariz., Matthew Allen Moreland of Portland, Ore., Shannon Colleen Moreland of Richmond, Va.; two grandchildren, Alexandra and Abigail Lambesis; and extended family. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 4 p.m. Monday in the Church of the Resurrection, 3501 Cedar Lane, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Kevin Segerblom. Following the Mass, there will be a reception in the church social hall. Friends may join the family today beginning at 4 p.m. in the home of Dr. Glenn and Karin Fritz, 2813 Greenview Road, Chesapeake, VA 23321 (484-7054). In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Mike Moreland Humanitarian Scholarship, P.O. Box 5185, Portsmouth, VA 23703 or to a charity of one's choice. Foster Funeral Home, Portsmouth, is assisting the family.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Dr. Moreland's passing. He was a rare soul in today's medical profession; one that provided professional care with compassion, humor and warmth upon every visit. Although he was "just my Dermatologist", he will be impossible to replace. My condolences to the family, friends, staff and patients of such a wonderful person.

My deepest sympathy to the entire Moreland family. My sister Mildred is a long-time employee and friend of Dr. Moreland's, and throughout the years, I have heard so many wonderful things about this incredible man. It was a blessing to know that she had such a thoughtful and considerate employer.

God bless you in your time of grief and comfort you with warm memories of his remarkable life.

Yours with Sympathy,

A good friend and colleague is called away. Mike was a leader among his colleagues, a vocal and articulate advocate of common-sense approaches to diagnosis and treatment in both routine and difficult cases presented at clinical conferences. God bless him and his family on this sad occasion. We'll miss you, Mike!

I first met Dr. Moreland when I was 5 and he removed a nevis from my finger. I do not remember any pain or discomfort because Dr. Moreland's humor and wit made me laugh all the way through the procedure. I cannot believe that such a robust personality and a wonderful clinician is gone. I will truly miss him, his stories and his laughter. I'll even miss him getting worked up about a gentleman who was using his garbage disposal (that still makes me chuckle).

May God send a comforter to give you peace during your time of loss. Thank you for sharing your husband and father with us. He truly was a special someone.

My husband was a patient of Dr. Moreland for many years. Dr. Morelands compassion and humor kept us going for all these years. He went out of his way several times to help us out. There are so many things we could say about Dr. Moreland. He was more than a doctor to us. May God give the family comfort and peace in knowing he was a special person to a lot of people.

Mike and I first met 15 years ago at a Rotary Club meeting. His first words to me were " Richard, here's my card..call for an appointment. You have a Basal cell on your cheek". What an amazing doctor and community leader. Mike did it all so effortlessly. I have been one of Mike's many devoted patients ever since. I miss him. My prayers to his family.

My thoughts & prayers go out to the Moreland family. I met Dr. Moreland more than 11 years ago as a new pharmaceutical rep calling on his office. We quickly became friends & golfing buddies back in the day when a doctor & pharmaceutical rep could enjoy a day at the links! I, also, have the honor & pleasure in working with his daughter, Shannon. What I remember most about Dr. Moreland is his love for his wife & children, his passion for helping others, his sense of humor, and our winning moments on the golf course. God bless you & the Moreland family.
