Sidney Johnson Obituary

Sidney P. Johnson CHESAPEAKE - Retired U.S. Army Sgt. Major Sidney P. Johnson, 84, passed away Jan. 24, 2009, in Chesapeake Regional Medical Center. Sid was born in Madison, Wis., to the late Margaret and Clarence Johnson. He served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1962 where he was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Medical Detachment 325th Gliders, 82nd Airborne Division, 194th Glider Infantry of the 17th Airborne Division, among others. Awards and medals included the Bronze Star, Army Commendation, Purple Heart, French Croix de Guerre, Fourragere, Glider Badge with Silver Stars and the Master Parachutist Badge. Other accomplishments include 23 years in programming, system design and development in civil service. He also held various managerial positions with banks, health and life insurance companies. He later served 16 years with Virginia Commonwealth University, where he was involved in financial and information systems and retired as database administrator in 1986. He was a member of Great Bridge Baptist Church, the 82nd Airborne Association and the 325th Glider Infantry Association. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Marjorie Seay Johnson; a daughter, Lynne M. Hudson and husband Charles R.; and a son, Steven E. Johnson. A celebration of life service with full military honors will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 1, 2009, in the Great Bridge Chapel of Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, 653 Cedar Road, Chesapeake. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Great Bridge Baptist Church, 640 S. Battlefield Blvd., Chesapeake, VA 23322.
