Cody Stallard Obituary

Cody Lewis Stallard WAKEFIELD - Cody Lewis Stallard, 16, died Jan. 31, 2009, in Southampton County. He was the son of Kenneth L. and Tracey Harrell Stallard and a junior at Southampton High School. He is also survived by his sister, Kelly Anne Stallard; grandparents, Charles and Judy Stallard of Ivor, Melvin and Kathy Harrell of Jarratt and Lorene W. Cook of Wakefield; his great-grandmother, Evelyn Harrell of Jarratt; his aunt, Barbara Stallard of Springfield; his uncle, M. Todd Harrell and his wife Amy of Prince George; cousins, Brandon and Carson Harrell; his girlfriend, Morgan Hulker of Courtland; and several cousins and step-cousins. Cody was predeceased by his grandmother, Clara Raiford Baines and grandfather, Clyde "Pete" Cook. Cody was a well-liked, hardworking and well-mannered young man. He was known as the "handyman" of the Berlin community because of his willingness to say "yes" when called by his neighbors to help out with yard work and odd jobs. He was an avid outdoorsman and he was always finding an excuse to drive his black Chevy truck. He spent his weekends coon hunting and also loved to deer hunt with the Bent Barrel Hunt Club. He was employed as a groundskeeper at the Southeastern Regional 4-H Center, Wakefield. He loved to ride his motorcycle and was a two-time state champion in the Virginia Cross Country Series. He spent many hours cutting grass and he was good with his hands. He was a member of the Millfield Baptist Church, Wakefield, and was an active member of the Millfield Youth Group and the church softball team. He ran the sound equipment of the church during services. Cody was loved and admired by his parents and family. He was a good boy and never met a stranger. His sudden loss has shocked and saddened his family and his community. Cody's love of life and free spirit will be sorely missed. A celebration of Cody's life will be held at Millfield Baptist Church, Wakefield, Thursday at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Jay Butcher. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial donations may be made in Cody's memory to Millfield Baptist Church Youth Group, 31389 Millfield Road, Wakefield, VA 23888. Arrangements are being handled by the Purviance Chapel, J.T. Morriss & Son, Wakefield. Condolences may be posted at www.jtmorriss.com.

Cody was a special young man having a grandfather like Pete around sure had a loving influence on his way of life. I remember Cody's first deer with Pete at his side smiling from ear to ear and eager to tell the story afterward how proud he was that day. Cody will be missed at Bent Barrel Hunt Club along with others that we have had the great pleasure of knowing and hunting with. I feel sure there is a deer hunt in Heaven so Cody can hunt with Pete again. My sincere and deepest sympathy goes out to his family at this sad heart felt time.

I didn't know Cody personally but after reading his obit and the story surrounding his untimely passing it gives such truth to the saying "only the good dies young". I am the mother of two sons and my heart breaks for this entire family. May God give you the comfort you need at this most heartbreaking time.

Dear Tracey and Family,

There are no words that can express how heart broken I am to hear of your loss. I wish there was something I could say that would lessen the pain you are feeling right now. I would like to share this poem with you. It was read at my step son's services. After time we found some comfort in it.

"Do not stand at my grave and weep:
I am not there I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the mornings hush
I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet
birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there, I did not die."

Cousin Kenneth and Tracey,

The question is why? God has a plan for each one of us, but it is hard to understand why one is taken at such a young age. The Raiford prayers are with you and your family during this time of grief. I know that your strong belief and trust in the Lord will get you through this troubling time. God bless each of you.

After meeting Cody,as a young boy, through his late grandfather, "Pete", who was very near and dear to me. I've continued to get to know him better and better through the years. Probably spending more time with him this past year than any other year. I will miss him greatly, as will the rest of the members of Bent Barrel Hunt Club. My sincere and deepest sympathy goes out to his family.

To the Family of Cody,
I am shocked and heartbroken for the great loss of Cody. I met him in Bent Barrel Hunt Club when he was a young boy. I always admired him and his love for deer hunting with us at the club. He loved to ride in my Dodge pickup truck. He always said "can I ride with you to our stands?" I taught him how to clean his first deer. I will miss him with all my heart. His memories will always be with me. May God be with your family thru this bad time. We will all be with him again someday. Cody will be greatly missed, our hunt will not be the same. God Bless You All.

Kenneth and Family. I heard of this tragedy through a mutual friend, Burnette Smith. He informs me that you are a brother firefighter. Serving your community in that capacity heightens your awareness and I am sure, your sense of loss. As brothers in the service we at the Lynchburg Fire Department and the Rustburg Volunteer Fire Department where Smitty serves, send you our very deepest condolences concerning the loss of your precious son. Though we can't be there for you know that we are there in spirit as you and your family go through this difficult time. Smitty asked that I especially tell you, Kenneth, that you are in his thoughts. God Bless.

Cody was a very nice boy. Always polite, nice, and well mannered at Bent Barrel Hunt Club. Everyone always heard from Cody "Where are we hunting at"? Cody and I would ride around while we were hunting. He made me laugh a ton. I remember him as a boy, ready to do anything for anyone. I will miss him forever and always.
Kenneth, Tracey, and family, let God give you the power to get through these hard times. Just remember Cody is in your hearts and is watching you, and remember you all will all see him again.
