Joan Riddick Obituary

Joan M. Riddick CHESAPEAKE - Joan M. Riddick, 64, passed away Jan. 23, 2009, in Newark, N.J. Joan was born Aug. 18, 1944, to the late Austin E. and Sarah James Riddick in Chesapeake. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Linwood Roberts (Dora), Austin E. Riddick Jr., James H. Riddick, Preston R. Riddick and Danny E. Riddick and one sister, Diane Riddick. Joan graduated from Crestwood High School in 1962 and attended Elizabeth City State College in North Carolina. She worked for Keystone Camera Co., in Patterson, N.J., after which she went on to earn her bachelor's and master's degrees in social work from Rutgers University. She became a director of Integrity House where she was the first African-American director to serve as a member of the executive board. Joan is survived by two daughters, Joann Riddick of Chesapeake, Simone Malonga (Caesar) of East Stroussburg, Pa.; and one son, Dion Downey of Neptune, N.J. She also leaves three brothers, Augustus Riddick (Brenda), Dennis Riddick of Chesapeake and Micheal Riddick of Ventura, Calif.; three sisters, Betty Robinson (Isaiah) of Virginia Beach, Brenda Thomas (Gregory) of Portsmouth and Kathy Andrews (Larry) of Chesapeake; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two aunts, Dorothy Gantz of Virginia Beach and Helen Langford of Portsmouth; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Homegoing services were held Jan. 31, 2009, in Saint Luke AME Church, Newark, N.J., by Bishop Edward D. Roberts. Interment service was at the Hollywood Cemetery, Union, N.J.

Your smiling photograph hangs matted and framed above my desk. Wayne gave it to and I still look up to you every day. We talk about you often and have such special memories of your wisdom, humor, and kindness. The treasure of your friendship is a blessing we treasure at home and at Integrity every day. Our trips to Italy, Capri,
Ireland, Vegas and to our own kitchens were among the best in our lives. Oh, how we love you still!

I was blessed with the opportunity of having known Ms. Joan Riddick for numerous years. She was an angel sent by God to brighten and better the lives of young people, in particular. Ms. Riddick gave her all, and she was loved and respected by many. She will forever be missed. I send my deepest condolences, and I pray that God will comfort you all during this time of sorrow.

to the riddick family ms riddick was like my mother she help me get my g.e.d. and she was always there when i needed her the best thing is she showed up for my wedding sept2008 i will truely miss her but i will see her on the other side.
