George Andrews Obituary

George Andrews PORTSMOUTH - George Andrews died at his home in the 900 block of Horne Ave., Feb. 3, 2009. He was born Feb. 23, 1931, to the late Manuel and Jennie Andrews in Onset, Mass. He was a graduate of Wareham High School, Class of 1948, and Norfolk State University. He retired from the U.S. Navy as a senior chief radioman after 20 years. He also retired from the Portsmouth school system as a sixth grade teacher after 14 years. He was a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Epsilon Nu Lambda Chapter. He was the beloved husband of 51 years to Gloria Andrews; devoted father of daughters, Velma (Dexter) Greene of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., and Angelina (Elijah) Gooden of Pearland, Texas; and cherished grandfather to Jennifer, Christine and Elijah Gooden IV, all of Pearland. He is also survived by his sister, Anita Lopes and brother, Manuel Andrews Jr., both of Onset; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by daughter, Jennie Andrews. Following his wishes, there will be no funeral and no public viewing. Graveside service and interment will be Friday at noon in the Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk. Family and friends will assemble Friday at 11 a.m. in Fisher Funeral Home, 1520 Effingham St., Portsmouth.
