Joseph Smith Obituary

Joseph L. Smith Sr. PORTSMOUTH - Joseph Lee Smith Sr., 90, of the 1900 block of Laigh Road, quietly slipped away into the arms of his Savior on Feb. 4, 2009. "Trustee," as he was affectionately called, was born Dec. 18, 1918, to the late James and Eldora Smith in Portsmouth. He retired from the Naval Ammunition Depot, St. Juliens Creek, Portsmouth, after many years of service. He was a lifelong member of Third Baptist Church where he served as chairman of the trustee ministry and also many other capacities within the church. He was predeceased by his wife, Mamie R. Smith and daughter, JoAnn S. Boone. He leaves to cherish his memory two daughters, Zenobia S. Allen (Ronald) of Chesapeake and Dolores S. Hines (Alan) of Portsmouth; one son, Joseph Lee Smith Jr. of Portsmouth; one sister, Zenobia Elliott of Portsmouth; one brother, Edward Smith of Ettrick, Va.; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends and a devoted friend, Ms. Frances Barrett. A life celebration service will be held at Third Baptist Church, 461 Godwin St., Portsmouth, Monday at 1 p.m. Viewing will be held today from 5 to 8 p.m. at J.T. Fisher Funeral Services, 1080 N. George Washington Highway, Chesapeake. Interment will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Condolences can be offered to the family at www.jtfisherfuneralservices.com. The family will receive friends at the residence.

To the Family--

'Trustee' will be greatly missed. I fondly remember how he and the other trustees and deacons kept us on the straight and narrow, particularly during Vacation Bible School. He was a true servant and met everyone with a word of encouragement. May God comfort and keep you during this time.
