Chloe Harris Obituary

Chloe M. Harris VIRGINIA BEACH - Chloe M. Harris, 98, of the 5700 block of Lancelot Drive, passed away Feb. 12, 2009. She was born in Hamilton, Ala., and was the daughter of the late Mark McKay and Georgiann Hardin McKay. Chloe was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Wilburn William Harris. She retired from Center Shops at Wards Corner in Norfolk. Affectionately known as "Nana," she dedicated her life to the Lord, her family and friends. In her younger years she participated in church activities, worked with Meals on Wheels and donated thousands of hours to the American Cancer Society. She was an avid reader, gardener, cook and loved to travel. Chloe is survived by two daughters, Billie Jean Harris and Ruth Ann Johnson, both of Virginia Beach; three sisters, Ruth Hughes of Branchville, Ala., Mary V. Underwood and Jessie E. Fiddy, both of Norfolk; a grandson, Eric C. Johnson and wife Alicia of Virginia Beach; a sister-in-law, Marjorie McKay of Birmingham, Ala.; nephews, Mark Donald Underwood and wife Peggy of Norfolk, Kenneth Hughes and wife Peggy of Branchville, Ala., Ernest McKay and wife Louise of Rocky Mount, Va., Jerry Wayne McKay and wife Gerald Dean of Tupelo, Miss., and Eugene McKay and wife Kathleen of Forest, Va. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Kelly, Joe and Troy McKay and one great-grandchild, E. Christopher Johnson Jr. The family wishes to extend their appreciation to the staff of Beth Sholom for their loving care and concern during the last five years. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, with the Rev. Stephen M. Ratliff officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the funeral home. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
