Elizabeth Bonner Obituary

Elizabeth Bonner GREENSBORO - Elizabeth Bonner, known as "Betty," passed away Feb. 21, 2009, in the comfort of her home surrounded by her loving family. Elizabeth was born in Mount Carmel, Pa., and raised in Philadelphia. She married her husband, James, and traveled with him while in the Navy. She lived 40 years in Virginia Beach before moving to Chesapeake in 1999. During this period, she worked 27 years with civil service, the last 12 proudly served as contracting officer with CNSWG Two at Little Creek. For this dedication, she was recognized by all the Navy SEAL teams and awarded the Meritorious Civilian Service medal. In May 2002, she relocated to Greensboro, N.C., to be with her daughter and family. She was awarded a lifetime membership in the Virginia Parents/Teacher Association for her work with elementary school children. For her work with the U.S. Savings Bond Program in this area, she was awarded recognition by the U.S. Treasury Department. She was also a member of New Garden Women of the Moose Chapter 1602. Her family and friends will always remember her as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She will be deeply missed. Betty is survived by her husband of 53 years, James Bonner; daughter, Catherine Kernels and husband Michael and beautiful granddaughter, Olivia, of Greensboro; son, James Bonner Jr. and wife Michelle and their precious children, Kathryn, Christopher and Madison of Sandston, Va.; sister, Florence Palladino and her husband Ralph of Woodlyn, Pa.; sister-in-law, Mary Boyd of Kulpmont, Pa.; sister-in-law, Peggy Marchetti of Essington, Pa.; a younger "sister," Sharon O'Connor of Jeffersonville, Pa.; godchild, Elizabeth Fenn of Lester, Pa.; many nieces, nephews and wonderful friends. Betty lived for her children and grandchildren who she adored and who kept her alive for so many years after her heart problems through love and laughs. Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. A Mass of Resurrection will be held at 10 a.m. today at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park. I am sorry to hear about the loss of Betty, wife and mother. I know she was loved by all of her family and friends. Her kindness and caring attitude was very much appreciated by my family over the years by taking my mom to play Bingo with her. Your family are in my prayers during this time.
