Anuradha Datyner Obituary

Anuradha K. Datyner NORFOLK - Dr. Anuradha Kotwal Datyner died Feb. 25, 2009, at the age of 46. She was tragically taken from the best place she could be - with her family, by breast cancer. While the disease overtook her body, it could never touch her indomitable spirit. Anuradha was born in India to a large loving family. She graduated high school at 15 and entered Ferguson College earning a degree in physics at 18. Coming to the United States she obtained a Ph.D. in biophysics and the State University of New York at Stony Brook at 23, then going to medical school, earning an M.D. at 27. She became a U.S. citizen and felt that this was the greatest country in the world. It was in medical school that she discovered her true passion, her children, Emily and Bryan. She chose a career in rehabilitation medicine because of the time it would allow her to spend with them. If she had her wish, she never would have done anything else. Anuradha came to Tidewater as director of the Chronic Pain program at Maryview Medical Center. She then spent the remainder of her career caring for those with complaints related to the spine at the Spine Center of Hampton Roads. She was loved by her patients, by the office and hospital staff and her colleagues for her expertise, empathy and care as well as good humor. She was a unique physician and an even better person. She will be missed and remembered by her loving children, Emily, Bryan and Joshua Kerner and her husband, Dr. Mark Kerner. She was cared for throughout her life by her mother, Dr. Usha Shah and father, Dr. Ashoke Nanavati. Her in-laws, Bonnie and Stuart Kerner, experienced what a loving individual she was. Her ex-husband, Nickolas Datyner, was a continuing friend and helpful co-parent. Her dogs, Max, Duke and Maya, will always be looking for her. The family sends our thanks to the many friends, colleagues, patients who provided endless support, love and encouragement during these difficult times. In lieu of flowers, Anu would have asked that you save the money you would have spent, work less and spend more time with your family. For those compelled to make a gift, a donation to the Susan Komen for the Cure or to your local animal rescue organization would be appreciated. A memorial service is being arranged. The family received friends in the home of Dr. Mark Kerner Friday and Saturday. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Norfolk Chapel, is handling arrangements. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.hdoliver.com.

To Dr. Mark Kerner and the Datyner families: After hearing about the passing of Dr. Datyner I felt as if I lost a great friend. I met Dr.Datyner in May of 1999, suffering from extreme pain and disability. She guided me through all of the alternatives before considering surgery to make me as comfortable as possible.
Dr. "D" was very warm and compassionate and made me very comfortable in handing me over to her husband, Dr. Kerner for my back and neck surgeries. I will never forget her!!! My sincere and heart felt sympathy to you and your families.

Dear Dr. Kerner, family and friends of Dr. Anuradha Datyner:

When we lose someone we love, it seems that time stands still. What moves through us is a silence, a quiet sadness, a longing for one more day, one more word, one more touch, we may not understand why you left this earth so soon, or why you left before we were ready to say good-bye, but little by little, we begin to remember not just that you died, but that you lived. And that your life gave us memories too beautiful to forget.
Please accept my heartfelt sympathy on the passing of this caring person and physician.
