Mary White Obituary

Mary E. Tucker White VIRGINIA BEACH - Mary Elizabeth Tucker White, Ohio native and longtime resident of Virginia Beach, passed away Feb. 23, 2009, following an extended illness. A career educator, Mrs. White retired from the Norfolk Public Schools in 1996 and spent her remaining active years assisting and supporting her church and her husband's ministry in several capacities in her role as beloved "First Lady" of First Calvary Baptist Church of Norfolk. She is survived by her devoted husband of 58 years, Dr. Johnny L. White Sr., pastor of First Calvary Baptist Church; a son, Dr. Johnny L. White Jr. (Jessica) of Texas; two grandchildren, Zen and Remy; two sisters, Frances Pounds and Hattie Hightower (John) of Florida; two brothers, Joshua Ready (Gwen) and Michael Ready (Elaine); several nieces and nephews, other family and friends, and numerous "adopted" children from relationships developed with young people through schools, churches and family friendships over the years. Her parents, Elizabeth and Aggie Tucker, and a brother, Daniel, preceded her in death. A celebration of her life will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in First Calvary with Dr. Robert G. Murray, First Baptist Bute Street, and Dr. Clifford Jones of Friendship Baptist Church, Charlotte, N.C., presiding. Interment will follow in Roosevelt Memorial Gardens.
